Rehabilitation and Communication Skills
Machakos Technical Institute for the Blind is the only institution of its kind in East and Central Africa. Here visually impaired persons receive recognized vocational training in various skills while the newly blinded persons receive proper assessment and total rehabilitation with necessary skills for self-reliance and total integration in the society as it is stated in our vision. In the technical (vocational training) area learners train in Carpentry and Joinery, Knitting, Dress-making / Tailoring, Masonry, Tannery, Leatherwork and Shoe making. Learners are examined by two examining bodies namely National Industrial Training Authority and The Kenya National Examinations Council and are awarded Certificates. For the newly blinded learners, the institute plans programmes tailor-made for each learner and they are taught Braille Literacy, Orientation and Mobility, Typing, Individual Living Skills, Computer Literacy and Massage. The whole rehabilitation programme takes a minimum of six months i.e. two terms. On completion learners are awarded with internal certificates .
